September 12, 490 BC. JC: the Greek armies crush the invader coming from Asia in Marathon.
The
Battle of Marathon (in ancient Greek: Μάχη τοῦ Μαραθῶνος) is an episode of the
First Hellenic-Persian War in 490 BC. AD, having opposed a Persian landing to the
Athenian and Platean hoplites who won.
It takes place on Marathon Beach, on the east coast of Attica, near Athens.Following the revolt of Ionia,
Darius decides to punish the Greek cities which had brought their aid to his rebellious subjects. After taking
Naxos and
Eretria, the Persian expedition, on the advice of Hippias who hopes to regain power in
Athens, lands on the beach of
Marathon. After five days of face-to-face
, the phalanx and Platean crush the Persian infantry which fled and re-embarked at the cost of heavy losses. The Greek army then quickly fell back on
Athens to prevent the landing of the other part of the Persian expeditionary force at
Phalère.
This victory puts an end to the first Heeleno-Persian war. A new attack takes place ten years later under the leadership of
Xerxes. The battle of Marathon plays an important political role with the affirmation of the Athenian model and the beginning of great careers for Athenian military leaders such as
Miltiades or
Aristides.
Marathon remains one of the most famous battles of Antiquity, in particular thanks to the commemorations it sparked, such as the marathon race invented for the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens.
