Robert Edward Lee was the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, then the general-in-chief of the armies of the Confederate States during the War between States.

Richmond was between May 1861 and April 1865 the capital of the Confederate States of America.

Located on a roundabout on Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, USA, its equestrian statue is the work of French sculptor Antonin Mercié.

Inaugurated on May 29, 1890, it was finally debunked on September 8, 2021 by the authorities of the city of Richmond, considered a "racist symbol"
