Today, 6 May, is an official holiday in Bulgaria - it is celebrated as the Day of Valour of the Bulgarian Army (Ден на храбростта и Българската армия).

On this day, the Orthodox Church honours St. George, who is known as a warrior saint and was therefore chosen as the patron saint of the Bulgarian Army.

The first ruler of Bulgaria after the new foundation of the state in 1878, Prince Alexander I, had issued a decree on 9 January 1880, by virtue of which the warrior saint George was proclaimed the patron saint of the Bulgarian armed forces and his feast day was declared the day of honour of the army.

Since then, the battle flags are consecrated with water on this day and a traditional military parade takes place. In the evening, the fallen are commemorated with a great military tattoo.

Happy celebrations to our comrades in Bulgaria!
