As every year, on September 14, on the feast of the Exaltation | Forteresse Europe

As every year, on September 14, on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, in front of the Baia Sprie mine took place the commemoration and the memorial religious service for the anticommunist prisoners who suffered and died in this extermination camp during the Bolshevik period.
Among them was Father Justin Pârvu, who spent about four years of hard labor in the old Maramures mine.

Hundreds of people from the county and across the country (mostly members of the Orthodox Brethren organization "Saint-Grand Martyr George, the Bearer of Victory") wanted to attend this event. Among them was the 96-year-old former political prisoner Grigore Pepene, who recounted, for a few minutes, in front of those present, several events that took place in the Baia Sprie camp.

Local authorities were also present, with the mayor of Baia Sprie, Alin Bîrda, addressing the crowd a few words.

“Welcome to our city! Like every year on September 14, we remember that we are Romanians. Why these saints in prison, forced to work? Because they were fighting for an ideal, they did not fight in principle against Communism, as a political party, which they do not like. They knew how bad communism was and fought against communism, not for other material or intangible, hidden ends, but for Romania. What does it mean to be Romanian? It doesn't mean criticizing other nations, spitting on others, and doing ugly things. Romanian means to do something for your country, to build something”, declared Alin Bîrda.

Archimandrite Casian Filip, ecclesiastical of the Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity of Baia Mare, was also present on behalf of the Orthodox episcopate of Maramureș and Sătmar.
