September 15, 1858: birth of Blessed Father Charles de Foucauld, Saint Cyrien, hermit missionary in the Sahara.

Charles de Foucauld was born in Strasbourg. After having embraced the military career, he wrote a book on his exploration of Morocco, which earned him great fame. In 1890, he joined the Trappists. 10 years later, he becomes a hermit. Having become a priest, he left for the Algerian Sahara, where he wrote the first French-Tuareg dictionary. He was assassinated on December 1, 1916 at the door of his hermitage. In 2005, he was declared blessed by Benedict XVI.
