C'est un pronom démonstratif, qu'on utilise pour désigner quelque chose ou présenter quelqu'un:

evening: le soir, la soirée.
Good evening ---> Bonsoir.
Good morning --> Bonjour.

La tournure interrogative by any chance?, toujours placée en fin de phrase,
