From a design perspective, one of the most structurally beautiful interchanges in Japan is this one pictured above of the Takaosan Interchange. Located in the Western suburbs of Tokyo and completed in 2012, it’s a 12-way interchange that connects Route 20 with the Ken’odo.
It’s nestled in between mountains and I can’t imagine the engineering challenges that had to be overcome but perhaps that is what resulted in the beautifully curvaceous structure.

The Norwegian Public Roads Authority is building the first floating highway world.
The E39 Coastal Highway reduces the 21-hour journey time between the cities of Christian Sand in Norway and Trondheim in the north by at least half by eliminating seven different ferry lanes.
These passages are being replaced by new floating bridges, tunnels and pipes, dubbed the Coastal Road.
A project of this size and scale using floating tunnels has not yet been completed anywhere else in the world, and efforts to complete the historic road project will cost more than $ 47 billion.
Although the project is not expected to be completed by 2050, they have already begun their first construction of a floating tunnel called the Rogaland Fixed Link or Rogfast.

The Australian city of Kwinana has designed a simple and cost-effective solution to deal with the discharge of waste from drainage systems. The town has put nets on the outlet of drainage pipes. These nets stop waste and pollutants from leaving the sewers, preventing garbage transported by rain waters from contaminating the town's local water reserve. It is a simple filtering system and it works like a charm. In just six months, collected 370 Kg (815 lbs) of garbage from two locations. Were installed on 750mm and 450mm-diameter concrete drainage pipe outlets. The initiative only cost around $20,000. Follow Civil Engineer for more engineering related interesting content.
